Detained Brig. Gen. Danny Lim joins LP senatorial slate

Detained Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, the bemedalled former chief of the Scout Ranger Regiment accused of launching a coup against the Arroyo administration, will join the senatorial race in the 2010 polls under the Liberal Party (LP). Sen. Manuel "Mar" Roxas III, LP vice presidential bet, said Lim had formally accepted the party's offer to join its 12-man senatorial slate. “Kasama natin si Gen. Lim sa ating laban para sa pagbabago. Sama-sama tayo. Hindi namin kayo pababayaan. Lalaban tayo," said Roxas in a statement released on Friday. (General Lim is with us in our fight for reforms. We will do it all together, we will not forsake you, we will fight together to achieve these reforms.) In a statement formally accepting the LP senatorial slot, Lim wrote: “With profound gratitude, great humility and deep awareness of the responsibility, I am extremely honored to have been included in the historic slate of Liberal Party’s senatorial candidates." “I will not stand by and watch this great country destroy itself under mediocre leadership that drifts from one crisis to the next, eroding our national will and purpose," added Lim. Incidentally, Lim is one of the founders of the Young Officers Union (YOU) that joined the Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabansa (RAM) in launching the bloody December 1989 coup against the administration of the late President Corazon Aquino. Mrs. Aquino's only son - Senator Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III - is the LP's standard bearer in the 2010 polls. Lim will join other LP senatorial candidates LP chairman and former Senate President Franklin Drilon; Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon; former Bukidnon Rep. Neric Acosta; Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto “TG" Guingona,; Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel; former senator Ralph Recto; and Sonia Roco of Aksyon-Demokratiko. At present, Lim is detained at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame while facing rebeliion charges in connection with the November 2007 standoff at the Manila Peninsula Hotel and also faces charges of mutiny before a military court in connection with the February 2006 coup. - GMANews.TV
