Oops! Suspected rebels apologize after shooting in Ifugao

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya – Suspected rebels tried to make reparations for shooting two villagers in the northern province of Ifugao during a religious activity last week.

The victims were identified by police as Emilio Dangew, 46, a resident of Sitio Nakapian, and Rodel Culian, 22, a resident of Sitio Daklanto. Both came from Numpaling Village, Asipulo.

According to Police Inspector Harry Dawayan, the two were attending an evening Bible reading activity at the house of a certain William Natalak in Sitio Tuking when they were asked by the host to prepare pigs for butchering, to be used for traditional ceremonies.

Dawayan said that while the victims were on their way to the pigpen, a gun shot was fired from a nearby forested area, hitting Dangew on the right side of his body and Culian on his left arm and lower chest.

Culian said he managed to look at the source of the shot and claimed that he saw three male suspects wearing combat boots, black shirts, and pants, and clutching long firearms.

Fearing that they would be fired at again, Culian said he shouted out that he and Dangew are civilians, after which he reportedly heard one assailant saying: “Apay nga pinaltugam ti civilian? (Why did you shoot a civilian?)"

In his testimony to the police, Culian said that he was able to run towards Natalak’s house to inform the others that they had been shot.

Nearby residents told authorities that the assailants immediately showed up to apply first aid to the victim’s wounds then asked for forgiveness. Before leaving, the armed men also reportedly gave P3,000 pesos to help pay for the two men's hospitalization expenses. - GMANews.TV
