Ex-teammates Black, Agustin back in spotlight

Former teammates Norman Black and Ato Agustin once again shared top honors Sunday night after being named the top coaches during the 2009 Collegiate Basketball Dinner-Awards Party presented by the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps.

Black coached San Miguel with Agustin as one of his players in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). They helped the Danding Cojuangco-owned Beermen franchise to several championships even winning a Grandslam in their first year together.

Black guided Ateneo to back-to-back UAAP titles while Agustin, in his rookie year as San Sebastian mentor, steered the Stags to the NCAA crown to earn the Coach of the Year awards.

“He (Agustin) gave me six championships in the PBA so we had a long history together. He's a great player and now he's a great coach," said Black.

"Si coach Norman, talagang binigyan niya ako ng kumpiyansa. Kung paano niya ako binigyan ng kumpiyansa, ganun din ang tinuro ko sa mga players ko (Coach Norman Black developed my confidence. And everything I learned from him I passed it on to my players)," said Agustin.

Former San Beda coach Ato Badolato, who retired after the season, was also honored receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for leading the Red Cubs to 16 of their 17 overall titles spanning over three decades.

“I’m proud to contribute in a small way in developing players like Benjie Paras, Ronnie Magsanoc, Dindo Pumaren, Renren Ritualo and LA Tenorio," said Badolato.
