FVR to bare presidential pick Wednesday night

Former President Fidel V. Ramos will announce on Wednesday night his presidential bet for the 2010 elections.

But a day before that, he will meet with Sen. Benigno Simeon “Noynoy" Aquino III, the standard bearer of the Liberal Party (LP), according to Aquino himself.

"Gusto daw makipag-usap so nakipag-appointment kami," Aquino told reporters Tuesday before the start of the oath-taking ceremony of new LP members, which included his girlfriend, Valenzuela Councilor Shalani Soledad.

(We were told that he wanted to talk with us so we set an appointment.)

The meeting will be held Tuesday night in an undisclosed place.

An advisory from Ramos' office said the former president would announce his presidential choice at the Champagne Room of the Manila Hotel.

Interviewed by reporters last Monday, Ramos said he would pick a presidential candidate who has a clear and strong platform on environmental protection.

Ramos was one of the military officials who led the EDSA People Power I revolution that installed Aquino’s mother, the late President Corazon “Cory" Aquino, to Malacañang in 1986. The historic gathering also saw the end of the Marcos regime.

Mrs. Aquino supported Ramos’ presidential bid in 1992, but the two parted ways in 2005 when Mrs. Aquino joined the calls for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo over accusations that she manipulated the results of the 2004 elections.

Ramos has opposed the merger of his political party, Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), with the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi). The merged group is fielding former Defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. as its standard bearer in next year's polls. - KK/ GMANews.TV
