Defending champion Misamis Oriental went to Patrick Cabahug in the homestretch to score a come-from-behind 84-78 win over the Trace Laguna Stallions for its second victory in the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Super Leg Tuesday night at the New Cebu City Coliseum.
Cabahug finished with 21 points despite a 7-for-18 clip but most of those came when the Meteors were climbing back from a seven-point deficit with five minutes to go in the contest to join idle M. Lhuiller Kwarta Padala Cebu Niños as the only teams with clean records.
The Mindanao-based squad can make it a perfect 3-0 record if it hurdles the Quezon Red Oilers Wednesday night to move closer to a spot in the championship game set for Sunday.
Melvin Mamaclay came off the bench to score 19 points on 5-of-7 triples in 21 minutes off the bench while starting forward Eder Saldua added 16 points and eight rebounds for MisOr.
A former high-scoring guard for Adamson in the UAAP, Cabahug erased a 70-63 deficit with 5:30 remaining by making nine straight points, including a three-point play that tied the game at 74-all with 3:46 remaining.
With momentum on their side, the Meteors eventually grabbed the lead for good when Mark Kong made a three-point play for a 77-74 tear after hitting a jump-hook with a foul to boot from Marlon Legaspi with 3:06 left.
Cabahug then sealed the win with a jump shot for an 80-74 lead with 2:09 to go.
It was a disappointing loss for the Stallions, who rallied from a 58-50 deficit with two minutes to go in the third quarter behind John Villaver and Leomer Losentes to grab a 70-63 lead.
Villaver finished with 22 points on four triples to lead Laguna while Losentes made 11 points in a reserve role.
In the curtain raiser, the Quezon Red Oilers entered the win column by handing the Smart Pampanga Buddies their second straight loss, 64-52.
Former Letran center Jonathan Pinera topscored for the Red Oilers with 13 points, guard Rob Labagala had an all-around game with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Hafer Mondragon notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
Quezon bounced back from a disappointing 75-61 loss to Cebu last Monday.
