A heavily guarded Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., prime suspect in the massacre of at least 57 people in Maguindanao, underwent a routine medical check-up on Friday and was declared healthy by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Doctors from the NBI Medico-Legal Division performed a physical examination on Ampatuan inside the NBI detention facility in Manila and found out that the Datu Unsay mayor has no serious health problems, except for a history of asthma.
"He is very healthy. That’s just normal because he is still very young," said Dr. Floresto Arizala, Jr., head of the NBI Medico-Legal Division.
NBI counter-terrorism head lawyer Ricardo Diaz echoed what Arizala said: "From what we have observed, he does not seem to have any major health problem or sickness. He underwent medical examination to determine his condition upon entering the detention facility."
Diaz added that the detained mayor is also scheduled to undergo an x-ray examination on Friday afternoon.
The lawyer also said that security will be tightened at the detention center, with back-up guards patrolling the area everyday.
Ampatuan was flown to Manila and brought to the NBI office on Thursday night after he surrendered to the government paving the way for an investigation on his alleged role in the massacre. [See: Ampatuan detained at NBI, blames MILF for massacre]
Ampatuan, however, denied any involvement in the killings and blamed the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for the incident.
As of posting time, the government is still preparing criminal charges to be filed against Ampatuan. [See: Govt prepares to file criminal charges vs Andal Ampatuan Jr.] - Andreo Calonzo/RSJ, GMANews.TV
