Qualifier De Ocampo leads Pinoy onslaught in World Ten Ball

Qualifier Jomar De Ocampo led the hometown bets’ onslaught in the 2nd World Ten Ball Championship at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

De Ocampo made Jeong Young Hwa as his latest victim handing the Korean a 9-6 defeat to advance in the round of 32, knockout phase of the tournament.

His previous victims are Wang Hung-Hsiang of Chinese-Taipei and compatriot Jeffrey de Luna in the elimination round.

De Ocampo, who has defeated the likes of Django Bustamante and Ronnie Alcano in the Manny Villar Cup, will march into the next round along with his more illustrious compatriots – Lee Van Corteza, Dennis Orcullo, Antonio Lining, Warren Kiamco and Marlon Manalo.

Two more little known Filipino players, Elvis Calasang and Jundel Mazon, also earned spots in the next round.

The 22-year-old son of a pool bar owner kept his rival’s rhythm out of the game by carefully studying his next move.

Sinasadya kong tagalan yung tira ko para mawala yung pasensiya nila sa akin," said De Ocampo, who started playing competitive pool at the age of 10. “Ganyan yung ginawa ko kay Jeff (De Luna) dahil mabilis siya tumira eh."
Lee Van Corteza

Corteza, Lining, Kiamco and Orcullo also stayed perfect in the tournament.

Corteza booked a seat in the round-of-32 following a tough 9-7 victory over Konstantin Stepanov of Russia.

Corteza had to battle Stepanov, the man who eliminated Efren ‘Bata" Reyes in the 2007 World Pool Championship, toe-to-toe and needed to complete four tough shots in the 16th rack to wrap up the match.

Asked about his expectations in the tough grind of the tournament, Corteza has only one thing to say: “Gusto kong maging world champion."

Kiamco repulsed Jalal Yousef of Venezuela, 9-8, while Lining came from behind to beat Corey Deuel of the United States, 9-4. Orcullo dumped top-ranked US player Oscar Dominguez, 9-2.
Antonio Lining

Calasang ousted Markus Juba of Finland, 9-5, while Mazon held steadier against Alain Martel of Canada in a hill-hill encounter, 9-8. Manalo ripped Chinese rival Fu Jianbo, 9-4.

There was one casualty among Pinoys who entered the last 64 – Jericho Banares after he suffered a 9-1 loss to Thorsten Hohmann of Germany.

Other players who advanced to the round-of-32 as of press time include reigning World 9-Ball champion Daryl Peach of Great Britain, Japanese bets Naoyuki Ooi and Satoshi Kawabata, Nguyen Anh Tuan of Vietnam and Alwi of Indonesia.

Peach waylaid Mario He of Austria, 9-4; Ooi subdued Adam Smith of Canada, 9-4; Kawabata outplayed Radoslaw Babica of Poland, 9-6; Nguyen ripped Karl Boyes of Great Britain, 9-5; and Alwi, the one named wonder, dismantled two-time world champion Johnny Archer of the United States, 9-2. – GMANews.TV
