Patrick Cabahug struggled in the first three quarters but regained his red-hot shooting in the payoff period to help the Misamis Oriental Meteors keep their title-retention bid in the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Super Leg.
With Cabahug stepping up, the Meteors survived a strong challenge by the upset-hungry Quezon Red Oilers for a 71-69 win to arrange a title showdown with the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Cebu Niños.
MisOr fell behind by seven points, 44-37, with 3:55 remaining in the third period but came through with a 13-6 windup to tie the game at 50-50 entering the fourth canto.
That set the stage for Cabahug's offensive outrage, hitting 10 points, including six straight points to help the Meteors grab a 64-61 lead with 2:01 remaining.
Earlier, the former Adamson Falcon dished a pass to big man Ronald Lamocha for a three-point play as the Meteors took the lead for good, 58-57, at the 4:33 mark.
Cabahug finished with 15 points despite a 5-of-13 shooting, ably supported by center Erian Daja with 12 points and nine boards.
The Meteors are hoping to play spoiler roles to the Niños' remarkable bid of completing the conference with a clean 21-0 slate.
Last conference, MisOr, then led by current PBA cager Mark Yee, defeated Cebu at its home court in the do-or-die fifth game to win the championship.
Floyd Dedicatoria fired 18 points but the Red Oilers failed to sustain their consistent showing in the payoff period.
It was Quezon's second straight semifinals loss to Misamis Oriental after losing in the five-game series last conference.
Jorel Canizares added 11 points while fellow UE alumnus Rob Labagala and Angel Raymundo chipped in 10 markers apiece.
Raymundo, who had 17 points and 23 rebounds the other day, registered another double-double after grabbing 13 boards as well. - GMANews.TV
