GMANews.TV bags 3 PopDev Media awards

GMANews.TV, the official Web site of GMA News and Public Affairs, won three awards at the 5th PopDev Media Awards. GMANews.TV’s Claire Delfin, also a TV reporter for GMA News, bagged the Best Investigative Report award for her story “Child pornography: Evil that preys silently on poor Filipino children," which tackles the sexual exploitation of poor Filipino children as young as five years old Delfin’s other piece, “Childbirth, still a grim reality for many Filipino mothers and babies," is also a runner-up for the same category. The story looks into the lack of information on proper pregnancy and access to quality health care, especially to women in urban poor and remote areas. GMANews.TV reporter Joseph Holandes Ubalde’s “When mom is away, the family goes astray" also won as runner-up for Best Feature or Magazine Article. The story tackles the drawbacks of having OFW mothers. Now on its fifth year, the PopDev Media Awards is conducted by the Philippine Legislators' Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) to honor outstanding and responsible journalism on population on development. Maida Ojeda of PLCPD said Delfin won because "her stories were comprehensive, compelling and well-researched. They were not very long but they were already in-depth." She added that the stories were also evaluated based on how they suit this year’s theme, which is placing the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals among the public agenda as the 2010 elections draw nearer.

Other winners include the I-Witness team of Howie Severino, GMANews.TV’s editor-in-chief. Their documentary "Papa, Papa, Paano Ako Ginawa?" was named runner-up for Best in TV Documentary. GMA News Research’s three entries were also runner-ups for Best News Reportage category. These stories include: “Much vaunted economic growth fails to ease poverty," "Targeting Ten: 10 Million Jobs by 2010," and “Imperfect attendance: School Participation not likely to reach target." The winning entries were picked among the 474 submitted this year. A committee composed of representatives from 10 organizations screened the entries. The awarding ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Mandarin Oriental Suites in Gateway Mall, Quezon City.
