Paeng in Turkey, to help raise funds for RP typhoon victims


Six-time world bowling champion Paeng Nepomuceno will take part in a diplomats’ bowling tournament in Turkey this weekend to help raise funds for victims of recent cyclones “Ondoy" (Ketsana) and “Pepeng" (Parma). Nepomuceno said he looks forward to participating in the bowling tournament in Ankara and in Istanbul, which will also mark the 60th anniversary of RP-Turkey diplomatic relations. “Almost everybody has been directly or indirectly affected by the typhoons. I thank the Philippine Embassy for organizing this bowling event and allowing me to make a direct contribution," said Nepomuceno. The Philippine Embassy in Ankara said the Diplomats’ Bowling Tournament is scheduled December 5 and 6, at the Play Planet bowling center locate at Ankara’s modern Panora Shopping Mall. Nepomuceno will compete in the bowling tournament with diplomats in Ankara on December 5, and with Turkish and Filipino bowling aficionados in Istanbul the following day. He will also conduct bowling clinics as part of the event. Nepomuceno is a Guinness Book of World Record holder for three categories – for being the youngest winner of the Bowling World Cup at 19 years old; for winning the title four times in different decades; and for the most number of career world titles at 118. He is also recognized as the greatest international player in bowling history. The International Bowling Federation hailed Nepomuceno as the “International Bowler of the Millennium" and was also inducted to the American Bowling Hall of Fame. He is also been designated as Ambassador of Goodwill by the United Nations. A large number of diplomats and other bowling enthusiasts are expected to register and participate in the two bowling tournaments, and have started practicing their games to prepare for the competition. At stake in the competition are special trophies as well as other valuable prizes. “The special bowling tournaments in Ankara and in Istanbul are part of the year-long activities marking the 60th Anniversary of Philippines-Turkey Diplomatic Relations this year," Philippine Ambassador to Turkey Pedro Chan said. “We also aim to raise funds to be donated to the victims of the recent series of typhoons and floods that devastated the Philippines where over 1,000 lives were lost and two million people have been dislocated from their homes and continue to suffer from illnesses and related problems brought about by those destructive natural calamities," he added. – GMANews.TV
