Senator Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III, boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, controversial doctor Hayden Kho Jr. and social networking site Facebook are among Google’s most-searched items in the Philippines this year. “From politics to sports, 2009 was peppered with events that got Filipinos searching for more information online, and Google was there to provide Pinoys unlimited access," said Therese Lim of Google Southeast Asia. Google on Tuesday released its 2009 Year-End Zeitgeist report, which it said represents what was on the minds of most information-hungry Pinoy Internet users in the past 11 months. Kho, who figured in a sex video scandal in the middle of this year, was Google’s fastest-rising local buzz maker. One of his partners in the allegedly leaked videos, commercial model Maricar Reyes, placed second in the top 10 fastest rising search items. Noynoy Aquino, Liberal Party’s standard bearer for the 2010 elections, was the fastest-rising politician searched for on Google News, according to the report. Other presidential hopefuls – Sen. Manuel Villar, Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and former President Joseph Estrada – were also in the list, placing sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. TV host Willie Revillame made it to the list as well. Grabbing the first and eighth spots in the top 10 fastest rising search items are Facebook and Twitter, two social networking sites that got almost every Tom, Dick and Harry - or their local counterparts, if any - collecting friends and contacts in the Philippines. Music-related searches were also high up in the list of fastest rising search items. “Love Story" became the hottest sing-along song for Pinoys, Lady Gaga got everyone grooving online after playing live at the Araneta Coliseum last August, and Michael Jackson's unexpected death last June unleashed a wave of belated sympathy for the King of Pop. Also in the top 10 is Pacquiao’s second-round knockout of British boxer Ricky Hatton last May. This year's Philippine Zeitgeist also shows that Baler is the fastest-rising local travel destination search term for Pinoys. A period film shown late last year starring Anne Curtis and Jericho Rosales spurred local interest in the surfer’s paradise. Among the most “Googled" issues and controversies, meanwhile, are the A(H1N1) – or swine flu – outbreak and the tropical cyclones that devastated many parts of the country.
