The Ampatuans and the Mangudadatus: A political map

The November 23 massacre in Ampatuan town highlights the power struggle in Maguindanao between the Ampatuan and Mangudadatu clans, both of which have long-standing political ties to adjacent regions in Mindanao. The Ampatuans have until recently maintained a strong presence in Maguindanao province. The Mangudadatus, meanwhile, are most prominent in the adjacent province of Sultan Kudarat – although the family also enjoys some political clout in Maguindanao. It will be recalled that the victims of the massacre were en route to file the certificate of candidacy of a Mangudadatu scion for the governorship of Maguindanao, effectively challenging the dominance of the Ampatuan clan in the region for the first time since 2001. GMANews.TV offers the following map of the local government officials of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat that indicates, where available, the known affiliation of officials to either the Ampatuan or Mangudadatu clan. The list of officials is from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) website, and locations of the various municipalities are approximated from Wikimedia GeoHack data.
