KIDAPAWAN CITY - Mindanao-based communist guerillas admitted to killing three village guards in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat despite having planned to execute only one.
Communist guerillas in the provinces of Sultan Kudarat in Central Mindanao and Davao del Sur in Southern Mindanao admitted to killing B’laan tribal chieftain Sendo Awing; his son, Greggy; and son-in-law, Antonio ‘Jan-Jan’ Dala last November 19 in Barangay Sinopolan in Columbio town.
But since the group originally planned to execute only Dala – whom rebels claimed was an intelligence agent of the 27th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army – the killing of the other victims “was a grievous blunder," rebel spokesperson Dencio Madrigal said.
Greggy Awing was the secretary of the Barangay Defense System (BDS) of Barangay Sinopolan, the Valentine Palamine Regional Operations Command of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) said.
The ‘death sentence’ should only be meted to Dala because of his direct involvement in the counter-insurgency operations of the 27th IB in Columbio town, Madrigal added.
“The Valentine Palamine Command is very much saddened of this tragic incident," said Madrigal as he sought forgiveness from the Awing family and residents of Barangay Sinapolan. “As the peoples’ true army, we will never stop from admitting our faults and correcting ourselves and doing the best we can for peoples’ welfare."
Dala “had used his cover as Sendo’s son-in-law in order to frequent Sitio Bukay Eil, a known rebels’ stronghold, to gather information," Madrigal said.
Dala was an ex-NPA who lied low and after few months surrendered to the 27th IB and “created havoc" among the people in the area, the rebel spokesperson said.
The “simple" order given to the rebels’ sparrow unit was to kill Dala and arrest Sendo and his son Greggy “in order to confront and warn them on their counter-revolutionary activities."
But the “simple" order was not followed resolutely by the sparrow.
Residents of Barangay Sinapolan told media here the rebels first shot Dala on his stomach.
When Greggy tried to escape he was also shot and killed by the rebels. They also took Sendo Awing and later killed him. - RJAB, Jr./RSJ, GMANews.TV
