Filipino dead, 7 missing in Lebanon sea mishap

At least one Filipino seafarer was confirmed dead while seven others went missing after the ship they were boarding sank off Lebanon.
The Filipinos were on the Panamanian cargo ship, "Dany F II," when the vessel submerged off the coast of Tripoli, Lebanon in the evening of December 17 amid a stormy weather, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Monday night.
The ship was supposedly on its way from the Uruguay capital of Montevideo to the Syrian port of Tartus carrying thousands of sheep and cattle when the incident took place.
The DFA identified the fatality as third engineer Alex Crisostomo.
The seven missing Filipino seafarers are Manuel Calaor; Leonardo Tiongson; Fuller Edgar; Manuel Bordas Jr.; Benedicto Cruz; Enrico Librada; and Vilter Amit.
Thirteen other Filipino passengers were rescued. They are Danilo Policarpio; Wilson Vicente; Lezer Gepulgani; Michel Olivia; Edgardo Pucan; Jonathan Rada; Rafael Tarroza; Erasmo Galanza; Leolen Babao; Rogelio Dequina; Joebert Benoman; Jowey Quinto; and Jason Magsino.
The families of the fatality and the missing seafarers have been notified of the incident by the manning agency, according to the department.
Charge d’Affaires Mohd. Noordin Pendosina Lomondot said the Philippine Embassy immediately dispatched Labor Attache Nathaniel Lacambra and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration welfare officers to Tripoli to extend assistance to the affected Filipino seafarers.
The Embassy is also in close coordination with the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants and the Lebanese Ministry of the Interior.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Damascus has informed the DFA that the seafarer who was rescued in Tartus, Syria is already in their custody.
The seafarer has undergone medical examination and is already in good condition, according to Philippine Embassy in Damascus Charge d’ Affairs Marlowe Miranda.
The embassy did not name the seafarer in Syria but said his travel documents and exit visa were being processed for his repatriation. - GMANews.TV
