DOJ verifies Ivler's whereabouts, chides mom for 'playing games'

As Philippine officials negotiated with international authorities to launch a global manhunt for a man tagged for a road-rage shooting, the Justice department chided the suspect's mother for playing games with the law enforcers. Marlene Aguilar, mother of suspect Jason Ivler, irked Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera for saying her son will surrender only to God, and will not surrender to authorities without a fight. “May batas para sa tao at may batas para sa Diyos. Huwag na sana magpilosopo ang pamilya niya ... Ako naman isang nanay rin. Kung ako magulang ni Ivler habang maaga pa i-persuade ko ang aking anak, kung kailangan harapin ang isang bagay sana iharap kay Ivler, learning process yan sa buhay (We have laws of God and laws of man. His family should not be playing games with us. I am a mother. If I were Ivler’s mother, I would have him face the music. That is part of the learning process)," Devanadera said. Last weekend, Aguilar said Ivler sent her a message through email saying he made it to Hawaii. She said he will not surrender and will “fight it out and will surrender only to God." According to Devanadera, the Philippine government is working with the International Police Organization (Interpol) to track down Ivler abroad. “Ang large part nito ay law enforcement work. Sa paghahanap, meron na tayong ginawang pakikipag-ugnayan diyan (The large part of locating Ivler is a law enforcement matter. We are making the proper linkages)," Devanadera said in an interview on dzXL radio. Ivler, the nephew of folk singer Freddie Aguilar and stepson of British diplomat Stephen James Pollard, has been the subject of a manhunt for a road-rage shooting last November 18, killing Renato Ebarle Jr., 27, son of Renato Sr., an undersecretary at the Office of the Presidential Chief of Staff. Earlier, NBI spokesman and Anti-Terrorism Unit head lawyer Ricardo Diaz said they would use the arrest warrant issued against Ivler as basis for their request to the Interpol. Diaz said Ivler can be made the subject of an Interpol red notice as he already has a warrant of arrest. An Interpol Red Notice requests the provisional arrest of wanted persons, with a view to extradition. The Interpol covers 188 countries. Such red notices allow the warrant to be circulated worldwide with the request that the wanted person be arrested with a view to extradition. - with Nikka Corsino/LBG, GMANews.TV
