Attempt to bomb power pylon in N. Cotabato foiled

KIDAPAWAN CITY - Army troops on Tuesday evening foiled a bombing attempt on a power pylon in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato, a police official said. Inspector Winston Seniel, the chief of police of Carmen town, said the improvised explosive device (IED) was found near the National Transmission Commission (Transco) steel tower in Sitio Dungu-an in Barangay Ugalingan. He said a concerned citizen informed authorities on the presence of the IED. Acting on the information, a team of police immediately secured the area while waiting for the arrival of the bomb squad coming from the nearby Barangay Nasapian, also in Carmen town. Sgt. Olsen Collado of the 601st Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) of the Philippine Army said IED was made from an ammo of a rocket propelled grenade (RPG). Seniel said the bomb was detonated through the use of a water cannon. Seniel said investigators are looking into whether the attempted bombing was perpetrated by the same group behind the Christmas Day explosion in the town. No one was hurt in the bombing, but it damaged the Isuzu truck of a businessman. Seniel said extortion is the motive of Christmas day blast, saying the Al-Khobar group demanded P1 million from the businessman for protection. The Al-Khobar group has been involved in several bombing and extortion activities in North Cotabato. It is said to be allied with the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf. - Williamor Magbanua/KBK, GMANews.TV
