Last fireworks for two as bridge collapses in Zambo

It was the first and last fireworks in Talukasangay Village in Zamboanga City for two people last night, as a hanging bridge collapsed and sent them to their deaths. The 25-meter bridge was meant for a maximum of ten but became the viewing gallery for as many as 50 spectators watching the first fireworks in their community. The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight as the crowd jumped excitedly during the show, stressing the rickety bridge. The bridge had been scheduled for demolition this year, said village chief Aduraman Nonio in an interview on dzXL radio, adding that he had already warned residents against overloading the bridge, saying the foundation of its supporting posts was a soft mangrove. Nonio said the bridge was a village project constructed with city funds as early as 1992. It was renovated in 2004.
