SC to prioritize poll-related cases after break

The Supreme Court will prioritize this January all the motions and petitions related to the upcoming automated elections when the magistrates return from their holiday break, its spokesman said. “Asahan natin sa pagbalik ng mga mahistrado sa Enero, yan ang uunahin talagang desisyunan na (We can expect our justices to prioritize these matters when they resume work in January)," lawyer Midas Marquez said in an interview on dzRH radio. He said the high court’s justices would likely tackle these matters en banc. “Lahat na mga petition, motion for reconsideration, clarification, lahat na may kaugnayan sa darating na eleksyon naka-prioritize yan (All petitions, motions for reconsideration, clarification and matters related to the elections will be prioritized)," Marquez said. He said these include petitions and motions related to the high court’s controversial ruling allowing appointed officials to keep their posts even after they file their certificates of candidacy (COCs). Some Malacañang officials have availed of the ruling to stay at their posts, including Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and Cabinet Secretary Silvestre Bello III. Ermita will run for congressman in Batangas province while Bello is part of the administration Lakas-Kampi-CMD’s senatorial slate in the May 10 elections. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had earlier said it would contest the ruling and ask the SC to reconsider its decision. - KBK, GMANews.TV
