Ex pro cager Distrito freed, back in Manila


Rudy Distrito is back in the Philippines and plans to rebuild his life back that the former professional cager is mulling to return as a coach or a staff in any of the 10 teams playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The 51-year-old Distrito, who once played for crowd darling Barangay Ginebra and the Concepcion-owned RFM franchise in Asia’s first play-for-pay league, arrived in Manila early Wednesday morning via PAL flight PR 103.
For the latest Philippine news stories and videos, visit GMANews.TV Distrito, also known as "The Destroyer" and a member of the 1991 Ginebra champion team, arrived in Manila along with four other Filipino deportees escorted by US Marshalls. He will then go to his home province of Bacolod to be with his family. The former University of the East Red Warrior received a sentence, in March 2007, of four to two years for manslaughter after killing Mexican national Juan Amaya in Nov. 2004. Distrito said he was thankful to his former coach Robert Jaworski and all his Filipino fans, which continuously sent him letters of encouragement, of helping his family while he was serving his time in jail. He added that his faith in God helped him endure the hardships he encountered while in jail. Distrito is best remembered by loyal Ginebra fans as the one who made the game-winning shot during the 1991 PBA Open Conference Finals where the Gin Kings rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to beat Shell. – GMANews.TV
