Sexbomb Dancers, Cebu inmates join forces for voters’ education
In theory, it seemed a far-fetched scenario: the sultry Sexbomb Dancers and the inmates of the Cebu provincial jail on the same dance floor. But hey, we aren't Filipinos for nothing. We love to dance at the drop of a hat, so the next step is just logical: combine the two for the noble purpose of boosting votersâ education. Thusâwith the aid of a catchy tune and bouncy stepsâthe two dance groups have accomplished what the Commission on Elections can perhaps only dream of. Theyâve made educating voters cool. The combined star power of the Sexbomb Dancers and the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) dancing inmates, who gained worldwide fame via YouTube by dancing to Michael Jacksonâs âThriller," gave an added boost to GMA Networkâs advocacy to educate voters.
The âBilog na Hugis Itlog" music video, which was unveiled in December last year, was headlined by the Sexbomb Dancers. It has since gone viral. Itâs all over Facebook, YouTube, and other social media sites. People of all ages sing the song and mimic the moves of the Sexbomb Dancers. In fact, teachers have credited the campaign for âfamiliarizing voters with this high-tech system." Just in time for Cebuâs Sinulog festival, Cebuâs 1,500 dancing inmates performed the âautomation dance" for GMA Cebu's morning show, Buena Mano Balita. The Sexbomb Dancers, who were teary-eyed when they first watched the inmates rehearse, watched the performance. The two groups went on to have a friendly dance showdown, to the delight of the morning show audience. Byron Garcia, CPDRC provincial security consultant, called the inmatesâ latest routine as part of their âdance therapy." He also revealed that it took the inmates five days to learn the âBilog na Hugis Itlog" dance, which features original choreography by Sexbomb Girls mentor Joy Cancio. They practiced for at least two hours each day. GMA Networkâs voter education campaign is groundbreaking because it has managed to inject fun and, at the same time, helped people become more aware of the automated elections. In this regard, the GMA News and Public Affairsâ efforts to teach people how to cast an automated ballot is a runaway success. Itâs a novel way to empower viewers through information. - Faye V.
