Convalescing Gorres leaves hospital, sets return to RP

Filipino fighter Z “The Dream" Gorres has been discharged from the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas, where he’s been treated after suffering from life-threatening subdural hematoma (traumatic brain injury) after a fight last November. According to PhilBoxing.Com, the convalescing Gorres was cleared to leave the UMC last Jan.15 and would undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of UMC physician Benito Calderon before heading back home to the Philippines with his wife Datches in February.

“Gorres and Datches will stay temporarily in the house of Dr. Benito Calderon’s staff, Richard, who happened to be Z Gorres’ fan," trainer Tony Martin said in an interview with PhilBoxing. “This will enable him (Gorres) to undergo rehabilitation without unnecessary inconvenience since the house is near Dr. Calderon’s clinic," he added. Gorres has actually started his rehabilitation program in a bid to regain strength in his upper body and lower extremeties. The 27-year-old fighter, the website reported, was able to walk a few steps already. One of the top Filipino prospects in the bantamweight division, Gorres sustained the life-threatening injury after hacking out a 10-round decision over Colombian Luis Melendez at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay last November 13. Gorres got hit by left cross from Melendez in the final round, managed to get up for the verdict that went to his favor but fell unconscious before leaving the ring. He was quickly rushed to the UMC and underwent cutting-edge emergency surgery. A piece of Gorres’ skull – the size of a man’s hand – had to be removed to give his battered brain room to swell, otherwise the swelling would be confined to his skulls and would have compressed his brain stem and shut down his breathing and heart, explained UMC trauma surgeon Dr. Michael Casey in an earlier interview with The Las Vegas Review Journal. “After nearly two months of around-the-clock nursing care and a team of physical therapists who are helping him walk and talk again, Gorres is on the way to becoming a functional human being who will be able to care for his wife and four children," Casey told The LVRJ’s Paul Harasim. Prior to the accident, Gorres was supposed to figure in an eliminator for the WBO bantamweight crown. - GMANews.TV
