Joey Ayala, Cynthia Alexander back bid of Nick Perlas

For his environmental advocacy, revered Filipino musicians Joey Ayala and Cynthia Alexander have lent their support to presidential aspirant Nicanor Perlas. Ayala, a recipient of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts' Fr. Neri Satur Award for Environmental Heroism, will even help compose the campaign song and participate in some of Perlas' campaign sorties, a statement from Perlas' camp said. Ayala also allowed Perlas to use any of his more than 100 songs, which include the classic "Walang Hanggang Paalam." "Si Nick lamang ang nakakaintindi ng tunay na pakikipag-ugnay sa kalikasan at tunay na pagbabago (Nick is the only one who understands true interrelatedness with nature and genuine change)," Ayala said. The critically-acclaimed Alexander, Ayala's sister, as well as Tapati Tarangoy of Ayala's band Bagong Lumad have also lent their support to Perlas. Perlas, who has worked as a consultant for several agencies of the United Nations and was part of the Philippine delegation to the 1992 Earth Summit, welcomed the endorsement of the musicians. "The endorsements of Joey Ayala, Tapati Tarongoy, and Cynthia Alexander show that some of the most thoughtful and talented Filipinos in the country see the importance of and urgent need for new politics in the country," Perlas said. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) initially turned down Perlas' bid for the presidency, saying he was incapable of launching a presidential campaign. The poll body, however, reversed its decision in a ruling last January 14. In a resolution, the Comelec said Perlas was allowed to participate in the presidential race because of his "distinguished track record in public service" and capacity to launch a nationwide campaign through the environmentalist’s "access to national media" and "organized group of persons…who volunteered to support for his bid for candidacy." - Johanna Camille Sisante/RSJ/LBG, GMANews.TV
