Iloilo City fire guts 112 homes, leaves 1 dead

A fire gutted more than 100 homes in Iloilo City in the early morning of Saturday, leaving at least one person dead.

The fire was captured on video and sent to GMANews.TV through YouScoop by a concerned citizen, Vanessa Chaw.

According to Chaw, the fire had started in an empty house without electricity and spread "from Zone 1 to Zone 3".

The fire struck Barangay Nabitasan in the city's La Paz district at 12:25 a.m. on Saturday, displacing 112 families, Fire Officer 3 Joseph Gatilago said in a phone interview with GMANews.TV.

Gatilago identified the lone fatality as Trinidad Formacion, 48 years old.

Gatilago said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, although authorities received reports that a candle left alight started the fire.

Displaced residents were evacuated in the Nabitasan Elementary School in La Paz town. - TJD/JV, GMANews.TV
