Kenney's advice for new US envoy: Be careful about polls talk

Outgoing US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Ann Kenney advised her incoming successor Harry Thomas Jr. to be cautious about commenting on Philippine politics especially at this time, when emotions are high leading up to the May elections. Kenney, in an interview on dzBB radio, said Thomas is coming in at a time when Filipinos are heading into national elections and elections are at every level. It will also be the nation's first automated elections. 'These aren't America's elections' "I would tell him these aren’t America’s elections, these are Filipino elections, we don’t have a candidate ... but I think it’s important these elections come out well, that they be transparent and all the millions of voters feel excited and energized about their vote, and the new president takes office ready to move forward for the Philippines and help the Philippines keep their leadership role in the region," she said. Kenney also advised Thomas not only to "learn Tagalog" but also to get out of the office and learn more about the rest of the country. "The Philippines is one country with 7,000 islands, it [has] 50-some languages. So do not believe or get trapped into thinking Manila is the whole Philippines. Get out and get to know the rest of the country," she said. 'Listen to them' She also said that while there are Filipinos who strongly disagree with US policy, they are nevertheless open to talking. "At least we’ve been able to air our difference honestly, forthrightly and continue the friendship even in areas where we don’t always agree. I’d much rather have the kind of open relationship where you can say I disagree with you on that issue but let’s look at where we do agree," she said. Kenney advised Thomas to continue working with US companies in the Philippines, but to listen to Filipinos as well. "I would tell him the great lesson is listen to them. Sometimes they have some good ideas, sometimes they are right, sometimes there are things we should be doing differently, or issues we should look at in a fresh perspective, and sometimes we just have to agree to disagree," she said. - TJD/HGS, GMANews.TV
