Kenya's Tanui claims 2nd running title in RP

Kenyan Willy Tanui captured his second major running title in the Philippines on Sunday as he ruled the 1st Kahit Isang Araw Lang-Takbo para sa Libreng Kolehiyo at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City. Tanui, winner of the Cebu City Marathon last Jan. 10, nosed out compatriot Kiberess Kember for the title, pouncing on the latter’s “miscalculation" of laps in the 21-K race. Tanui clocked a winning one hour and 14 minutes en route to the champion’s prize of P30,000. Kember was 14 seconds off Tanui, good for second place and P20,000 prize, even as Alley Quisay emerged as the best Filipino finisher at third place with 1:19:06 for P10,000 cash. “I was supposed to win but I made a mistake because I thought I needed one more lap. But it turned out that I was supposed to head straight for the finish line. I ran back but it was too late," a disappointed Kember said.

Miscelle Gilbuena, another champion in the recent Cebu Marathon, emerged the runaway winner in the distaff side with 1:40:09 for P30,000. A far second was Ana Vargas with 2:11:10 while Vanessa Napay took third with 2:12:07. Competitions were also held in the 10K, 5K and 3K distances with Alquin Bolivar and Nhea Ann Barcena topping the 10K races for P20,000 each. Justin Tabunda won two divisions - the 5K and 3K races - as the two events were flagged off at an hour interval. The former Palarong Pambansa veteran thus went home with P17,000 prize for his two titles. Adjennie Delos Santos ruled the women’s 10K race while Luisa Yambao topped the 3K race for cash prizes of P10,000 and P7,000, respectively. Featuring 50,500 runners, the race aimed to generate funds for the free college education program of UNTV's Kamanggagawa Foundation. - GMANews.TV
