Led by provincial grads, paltry 40% pass nursing exams

Released Sunday night, the 2009 nursing exam results continued the steady decline of passers with slightly less than 40 percent passing. 44.5 percent passed the 2008 exams, while 48 percent passed in 2007. Graduates of nursing schools outside Manila again dominated the list of top-notchers, with passers from schools in Iligan City, Batangas City, and Tacloban garnering the highest grades. A nursing graduate from Iligan City topped the 37,527 who passed the nursing licensure examination last November 2009, according to the results released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on Sunday. [See the complete list of passers here.] Clarie Morales Bontol of Iligan Medical Center College Inc. topped the list with 87.80 percent, followed by Bryan Noel Cueto Asis of Lyceum of Batangas (87.60 percent) and Dickson Araza Laude of St. Scholastica's College of Health Sciences-Tacloban (87.00 percent). The 2008 results showed that the best performing nursing schools were also outside Manila, with private nursing schools in Dumaguete, Iloilo City, and Tuguegarao all registering 100 percent passing rates. A total of 94,462 nursing graduates took the 2009 examinations, a six percent jump from the previous year when 88,649 took the exams. That reflects the growing popularity of nursing as a field of study, after tens of thousands of Filipino nurses have found well-paying work overseas in recent years. The lower passing rate, on the other hand, could be part of another trend: the spread of sub-par nursing schools around the country to take advantage of the multitudes of nursing aspirants. In an investigation published by GMANews.TV last year, nursing schools were shown to be mushrooming even after the government banned the opening of new nursing schools in 2004. Other "non-performing" nursing schools defied government closure orders and continued operating after obtaining injunctions from the courts.
