Cop killer shot dead in Cebu

A man wanted for the ambush- killing of a policeman in 2008 was shot dead after engaging a police team in a shootout in Cebu province Thursday afternoon. Radio dzRH reported early Friday that the suspect, Ronel Wagas, 24, fired at a police team serving a warrant for his arrest in Compostela town. Police said Wagas, who was linked to the ambush-slay of PO3 Jose Cañete in 2008, is a member of a local armed group engaged in gun-for-hire activities. Initial investigation showed a police team sought out Wagas at Tag-ubi village in Compostela town at about 4 p.m., but Wagas fired at them, prompting authorities to return fire. Recovered from him were a cal-.45 pistol and two empty shells. Cebu police said Wagas was considered "armed and dangerous" and believed to carry a hand grenade wherever he goes. - LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
