NBI verifying report Lacson is back in RP

Fugitive senator Panfilo “Ping" Lacson could already be back in the Philippines a month after he left the country apparently to evade arrest. National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Nestor Mantaring told reporters during Monday's press conference that the bureau received an intelligence report regarding Lacson's whereabouts. GMA News' Emil Sumangil said the NBI was verifying the report that Lacson already went back to the country and is now somewhere in Mindanao. The senator could not have either gone to the United States or Australia, Sumangil reported, quoting bureau officials.

Lacson's US visa was canceled after the senator was implicated in 2007 as co-conspirator in the espionage case involving his former ally, Senior Supt. Michael Ray Aquino. The senator also no longer has a valid Australian visa. The last time he was given one was in 2008. Lacson left the country for Hong Kong on January 5, two days before government prosecutors filed murder charges against the senator for his involvement in the November 2000 slay of publicist Salvador "Bubby" Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito. Sumangil said the NBI was also working double-time to have Lacson's name included on the so-called Red Notice of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). The Red Notice is one of the seven types of Interpol's notices. According to the Interpol, Red Notices "allow the warrant to be circulated worldwide with the request that the wanted person be arrested with a view to extradition." Individuals placed on the Red Notice indicate that they are wanted by national jurisdictions or the International Criminal Tribunals, the Interpol said. Interpol will also “assist the national police forces in identifying or locating (the person) with a view to (his or her) arrest and extradition." - ARCS, RJAB Jr, GMANews.TV
