Maynilad, workers settle labor dispute

A Metro Manila water distributor and its employees have settled a labor dispute, ensuring continued service for some six million residents of the Philippine capital. Maynilad Water Services Inc. (MWSI), which distributes water in the capital’s west zone, entered into a P46.608 million agreement with its workers to prevent “untoward incidents," the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said in its website. Under the settlement, workers are expected to receive a pay hike of P1,500 monthly plus a P200 monthly rice and meal allowance on the fourth and fifth years. Each covered worker will also receive P16,000 mid-year bonus on the fourth year and another P17,500 mid-year bonus on the fifth year. Each covered worker will also receive a P68,000 lump sum under the agreement, which was signed by labor and management representatives last February 5. Management and labor representatives have also agreed to refrain from committing any act that will aggravate the labor relationship situation in the company. Labor Secretary Marianito Roque lauded the settlement, citing the maturity of social partners who prioritize the common good over selfish ends. Roque likewise lauded the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) for exhausting all means to settle the Maynilad labor dispute. Maynilad Water Services, Inc., brings water to the west zone concession which covers Manila (except San Andres and Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, Congressional Avenue, Mindanao Avenue, Holy Spirit and Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Hi-Way), Caloocan, Pasay, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon. Maynilad also covers Cavite City, Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario. - RJAB Jr./ GMANews.TV
