Makati court gives Danny Lim 3-day freedom

A Philippine local court has given former Army Scout Ranger commander Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, a senatorial candidate of the Liberal Party, a three-day freedom to attend an event in his home province of Nueva Ecija. Senator Francis Pangalinan, campaign manager for the LP senatorial slate, told radio dzMM in an interview Thursday that Judge Elmo Alameda of the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 allowed Lim to leave his detention cell from Thursday to Saturday. Lim earlier asked the judge to allow him to attend the 75th foundation of his alma mater, St. Louis School, in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya Pangilinan said Lim might be using the time given to him not only to visit his former school, but also to campaign for his electoral bid. "Bilang kandidato sususportahan natin ang kanyang pansamanatalang paglaya para maitulak ang kanyang pagtakbo," Pangilinan said. Lim is detained at the custodial center of the Philippine National Police Headquarters at Camp Crame in Quezon City. He stands accused of mutiny before a military court in connection with the February 2006 coup and rebellion before the Makati court for his participation in the November 2007 standoff at the Peninsula Manila hotel. His co-accused in the mutiny charges - resigned Marine Col. Ariel Querubin - is also seeking a senatorial seat under the Nacionalista Party. Lim and Querubin founded the Young Officers' Union (YOU), a group of junior military officers that supported the bloodiest coup attempt by the Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabayan (RAM) of then Army colonel turned senator Gregorio Honasan II in December 1989. Lim and Querubin were reinstated following the peace pact the government entered into with the RAM-SFP-YOU in 1995. - Mark Merueñas/RSJ, GMANews.TV
