40° C weather possible due to El Niño —Pagasa

With the El Niño phenomenon threatening to make the coming summer season hotter, state weather forecasters are not discounting 40-degree Celsius weather in some parts of the country. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the temperatures in Metro Manila alone will likely go up to a sweltering 36 to 37 degrees Celsius. “Yang ibang bahagi ng bansa tulad ng Northern Luzon, isa sa tinitingnan natin (We will observe other areas of the country such as Northern Luzon)," Pagasa weather bureau head Nathaniel Cruz said in an interview on dzRH radio on Saturday, when asked about the possibility of 40-degree weather in summer. “Sa Metro Manila possible umabot 36 or 37 degrees, iyan sapat na para makaranas ng matinding init (In Metro Manila, the weather could go up to 36 or 37 degrees. That is enough to feel very hot)," he said. The hottest temperature recorded in the Philippines was in Tuguegarao in Cagayan province on April 29, 1912. On that day, the temperature there reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit or 42.2 degrees Celsius, according to the Weather Explained website. “Papatapos ang El Niño pero ang epekto ngayon lang nararamdaman sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng ating bansa. Ang isa lalo sa Luzon, ang kawalan ng ulan nagsisimula pa lamang (El Niño is in its final stages but the effects are being felt in the Philippines only now. In Luzon particularly, we are about to feel the lack of rain)," he said. He added the lack of rain is expected to persist along with hot weather from March to June. “Summer has not set in but the northeast monsoon has started to weaken. We expect the weather to get hotter in March and April, and especially hot in May," he said. —LBG, GMANews.TV
