BFAR: Red tide hits Bislig Bay in Surigao del Sur

BUTUAN CITY— The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Caraga regional office has issued a warning to residents near Bislig Bay and Bislig City to be extra careful in eating fish, shellfish, and other marine products harvested in the area due to red tide contamination. Regional director Nerio Casil claimed regular monitoring by BFAR personnel is being conducted around Bislig Bay and nearby areas to detect level of red tide toxicity. Casil blamed rising water temperature for the red tide threat. Red tide is a term used to describe the brownish or reddish coloration of sea water caused by the blooming of type of toxic algae that are harmful to marine life.
