Taxi flagdown rate may shoot up to P40 by April

Taxi flagdown rate may increase to up to P40 starting April from the current P30, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced on Tuesday. GMA News’ Cesar Apolinario reported that the LTFRB has agreed for a taxi fare hike although the board has yet to come up with a cost analysis to determine the exact amount of the increase. “Gagawa pa kami ng cost analysis para matiyak na maging fair yung pagtaas natin ng pamasahe sa taxi (We will come up with a cost analysis to ensure that the increase will be reasonable," LTFRB chairperson Alberto Suansing said in an interview aired over GMA News’ “24 Oras."

The Philippine National Taxi Operators Association asked the LTFRB last January to increase the current taxi flagdown rate from P30 to P40, citing the series of fuel price hikes and the increase in prices of taxi spare parts. “Alam na rin ng pasahero na kailangan na rin dahil na nga sa kung gusto nilang may maganda silang masakyang taxi (The riding public will understand because they also want improvement in the quality of the taxis they are riding)," said taxi operator Romeo Basilan. A group of taxi drivers and operators, however, said the LTFRB should cut down the taxi boundary rates instead of increasing taxi fare. “Instead na magtaas ng pamasahe, magbawas naman sila ng boundary. Iyon pong boundary, hindi na makatarungan ‘yan (They should cut down the boundary rate, which is at a ridiculous level)," said Noe Abricinos of the Bagwis Responsible Taxi Drivers’ Association. Abricinos likewise said that taxi drivers only earn P350 per day due to high taxi boundary rates, which range from P1,200 to P1,500 a day. - Andreo Calonzo/KBK, GMANews.TV
