Year of the Tiger: UST cops UAAP general championship anew

University of Santo Tomas (UST) proved that it is, indeed, the Year of the Tiger, as the España-based bets won the UAAP general championship for the 12th straight year at the end of Season 72. The Tigers collected an aggregate of 305 points built around seven titles in 28 events to run away with the general championship, their 37th overall in the collegiate league.

Finishing a far second was De La Salle University which tallied 252 points followed by host Far Eastern U with 229 points, Ateneo with 222 and University of the Philippines with 219. Perennial champs UST spiked this year’s domination with a sweep of the men’s and women’s indoor volleyball crowns, complementing it with victories in men’s badminton, men’s taekwondo, men’s beach volleyball, men’s tennis, and softball. Flaunting all-around sports excellence, the Thomasians had second-place finishes in men’s and women’s table tennis, men's and women's judo, women's taekwondo, women's tennis, women’s fencing, women’s athletics and men’s and women’s football. Third-place efforts in men’s swimming and men’s chess completed the Tigers’ overall dominance. No. 2 La Salle, for its part, gained from triumphs in women’s badminton, men’s swimming, women’s tennis and women’s football, as well as runner-up finishes in men’s badminton, men’s taekwondo, women’s volleyball and men’s tennis.
For No. 3 FEU, the biggest gains came from title romps in men’s and women’s table tennis, women’s taekwondo, men’s and women’s chess, women’s athletics and men’s football. Ateneo banked on its well-followed championship run in men’s basketball and conquest of men’s judo to secure the No. 4 slot, nosing out UP which lorded it over the field in women’s swimming and women’s judo. University of the East, which ruled men’s and women’s fencing and men’s athletics, took sixth place overall with 172 points followed by Adamson, the women’s basketball, women’s beach volleyball and baseball champions, with 101 points. Bringing up the rear was National U, which only had 45 points to show in the two-semester wars, benefiting mostly from its runner-up finish in baseball. - GMANews.TV
