RP ‘generally peaceful’ during Pacquiao bout - PNP

For a couple of hours, the Philippines was “generally peaceful and orderly" as Filipinos watched the much awaited fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ghana’s Joshua Clottey, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP). “Please be informed that per monitoring of all regions, [the] situation is generally peaceful and orderly," said PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina in a text message to reporters. He added that while the entire nation was glued to the fight, which Pacquiao won via unanimous decision, police personnel “worked and patrolled nationwide to ensure crimes will be prevented." Congratulations, Pacquiao The police and the military, meanwhile, were one in congratulating the 31-year-old Pacquiao. PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa described Pacquiao’s victory over Clottey as “splendid." Newly appointed Armed Forces chief General Delfin Bangit, for his part, thanked the Filipino boxing icon for the inspiration he gives to soldiers as a military reservist. “He displayed exceptional skills, stamina and spirit in his bout, reflective of a trained and well-disciplined soldier," Bangit said. Pacquiao holds the rank of senior master sergeant and is the sergeant major of the Army reservists. Bangit said the military is set to “honor" Pacquiao. “We will honor him [Pacquiao]. We will give special recognition to him for the accomplishment he made." - KBK, GMANews.TV
