Pacquiao-Clottey DVDs appear in downtown Manila

Less than 24 hours after Filipino boxing icon Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao conducted a boxing clinic at the expense of Joshua Clottey, video pirates conducted a clinic of their own, coming up with pirated discs of Sunday's (Manila time) bout. A report by radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo early Monday said the pirated DVDs of both the televised and satellite feed of the bout started appearing in Manila's Quiapo district. The initial batch of discs sold for P50 each, but vendors said they expected the bulk of the pirated discs to arrive in the afternoon. Vendors also promised "extras" in later copies of the bout, such as bonus footage of past fights and minus-one soundtracks of Pacquiao's favorite songs. Anti-piracy authorities have had a hard time going after DVD pirates and the vendors who sell them. While the Optical Media Board would conduct raids on suspected pirates’ lairs in downtown Manila, the pirates would normally resume operations in days. Filipinos rejoiced Sunday after Pacquiao beat Clottey at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. As in past bouts, Filipinos dropped everything to watch the televised fight, or at least listen to blow-by-blow accounts of the bout on radio. - RSJ, GMANews.TV
