1 dead, 6 hurt as truck slams vehicles in Antipolo

A person was killed while six others were injured after a delivery truck triggered an eight-vehicle smashup in Antipolo City early Monday. Radio dzXL reported the incident, which occurred at about 8 a.m. along the portion of Sumulong Highway in Barangay Dela Paz, involved a delivery truck that went out of control and plowed into eight other vehicles. Police initially identified the fatality as Retardo Regencia, 35. He died while undergoing treatment at the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center. Those injured, including one-year-old Audrey Tirol, were still undergoing treatment as of posting time. Truck driver Gaudioso Capiz, 48, said the brakes on his truck (UAG-748) failed, causing him to go out of control and hit the other vehicles. He was arrested and begged for the victims' forgiveness, according to a report on GMA News’ “24 Oras" newscast. Investigation showed the truck slammed into a Toyota Altis sedan and then hit the other vehicles at the opposite lane. Capiz was arrested and faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property with multiple physical injuries. It was the second road accident in Antipolo involving a truck this month. On March 3, eight people were hurt when a 10-wheeler truck slammed into 13 vehicles in Barangay Mambugan. - KBK, GMANews.TV
