PAGASA: Incoming cyclone to have little effect on RP

The first cyclone to enter Philippine territory this year will have little effect on the country and is not likely to last long, state weather forecasters have said. Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration forecaster Ben Oris said the cyclone was expected to enter Philippine territory at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. “Ito ay northwest ang direction (pero) ito ay baka mag-recurve o matunaw. May posibilidad na matunaw dahil may ridge of high pressure area sa may Northern Luzon (It is moving northwest and may change its direction, or dissolve if it gets near the ridge of a high pressure area in Northern Luzon)," Oris said in an interview on dzBB radio. Oris said the tropical depression, to be code-named “Agaton" upon entering Philippine territory, was at 1,050 km east of Visayas as of 2 a.m. Wednesday. He said it packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and was moving at 26 kph northwest. “May pag-ulan sa Eastern Visayas, maaring banda ng Borongan in Eastern Samar (It may cause rains in Eastern Visayas particularly over Borongan in Eastern Samar)," he said. In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the whole country will have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies except for isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Coordinating Council instructed disaster management units in the regional and provincial levels to take proactive action for possible effects of the cyclone. “Emphasis should be on proactive actions - evacuation rather than rescue," NDCC Executive Officer and Office of the Civil Defense administrator Glenn Rabonza said in a memorandum. He also instructed them to disseminate information about the tropical depression through local media, including community radio stations. “Conduct press briefings as often as needed. This local effort will complement and reinforce efforts at the national level," he added.— LBG, GMANews.TV
