PNP: Holy Week observance ‘generally peaceful’

Save for isolated petty crime incidents, road emergencies and accidents, the nationwide observance of Holy Week was “generally peaceful" and “meaningful," the head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Sunday. In a statement, Director General Jesus Verzosa commended his subordinates for successfully implementing their security and safety operations.

“PNP personnel manning the Police Assistance Centers were visible and available to ensure peace and order, and public safety for the holiday travelers and vacationing tourists. And this made the observance of Holy Week more meaningful," he said. He added that his men continue to monitor the peace and order situation as motorists return to Manila on Easter Sunday after spending the Holy Week in their provinces. Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina also said the PNP’s “Oplan Bantay-Lakbay" covers the summer season and not just the Holy Week. - Sophia Dedace/KBK, GMANews.TV
