Senator Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III widened his gap with closest rival Senator Manuel Villar Jr., whose rating fell by four percentage points in Pulse Asiaâs latest presidential preference survey last month, less than two months before the May 10 elections. The Liberal Party presidential bet picked up a point to increase his rating to 37 percent, while Villar of the Nacionalista Party slumped from 29 percent last February to 25 percent last month. The Pulse Asia survey, conducted from March 21 to 28, slightly mirrored the latest Social Weather Stations pre-election survey on March 19-22, when Aquino also picked up a point to score 37 percent and benefited from a six-point loss for Villar, who got 28 percent.

The Presidentâs supposed attempt to prove that she is not a "lame duck President" by making "midnight appointments" has further hurt her popularity, and this negative perception has extended to Villar, whom she is reportedly backing up, political analyst Benito Lim said. (See: âVillaroyoâ blamed for Villar rating drop) Trailing in the latest Pulse Asia survey were former President Joseph Estrada and administration bet Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro Jr., who maintained their ratings at 18 percent and 7 percent, respectively. Bagumbayan presidential bet Senator Richard Gordon and Bangon Pilipinas standard bearer and evangelist Eddie Villanueva were tied at 2 percent. They were followed by environmentalist Nicanor Perlas (0.3 percent), Olongapo City Councilor John Carlos delos Reyes (0.2 percent) and Senator Ana Consuelo âJamby" Madrigal (0.1) percent. Disqualified presidential candidate Vetellano Acosta ranked last at 0.08 percent. The survey had a ±2 percent error margin. According to Pulse Asia, 9 percent of the 3,000 adult respondents were undecided or gave no answer.
Vice presidential race In the same survey, Senator Manuel Roxas II was still the frontrunner, posting a 20-percent lead over rival Senator Loren Legarda. Roxas kept his rating at 43 percent, while Legarda dropped by 4 points to 23 percent from a month earlier. The biggest gainer was Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, whose rating went up by 4 points to 19 percent.

Former Manila Metropolitan Development Authority chief Bayani Fernando got 3 percent, actor and television host Eduardo "Edu" Manzano got 2 percent, and former Securities and Exchange Commission head Perfecto Yasay Jr. scored a percent. Former broadcaster Jay Sonza got 0.5 percent while Ang Kapatiranâs Dominador Chipeco got 0.1 percent. Nine percent of the respondents were also undecided or gave no answer.
By area and class The survey showed that the Liberal Party tandem of Aquino and Roxas dominated most areas and socioeconomic classes. Aquino got 42 percent in the National Capital Region against 17 percent for both Villar and Estrada. In the Visayas, Aquino scored 41 percent against Villarâs 30 percent and Estradaâs 8 percent.
Source:Pulse Asia He and Villar were in a tight race in the balance of Luzon (Luzon excluding NCR), with Aquinoâs preference at 33 percent versus Villarâs 26 percent and Estrada's 17 percent. In Mindanao, Aquino scored 37 percent, a 14-point lead over Villar and an 8-point lead over Estrada. For the ABC economic classes, Aquino got a voting support of 49 percent compared with Villarâs 17 percent. He also dominated class D, getting 37 percent compared with Villarâs 25 percent. But in class E, Aquinoâs 34 percent was âstatistically close" to Villarâs 28 percent. Estrada, who has also promoted himself as the champion of the masses, got a voting support of 24 percent from class E respondents. Meanwhile, Roxas ranked the highest across all areas and socio-economic classes.

For classes ABC, Roxas scored 54 percent compared with Legardaâs 12 percent and Binayâs 17 percent. For class D, Roxas got 43 percent versus Legardaâs 21 percent and Binayâs 19 percent. Roxas also dominated class E with a 40 percent voting support. â
