Explosion rocks Davao days after Basilan blasts

Three days after the series of blasts in Basilan, another explosion rocked the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, this time in Davao City, where two men emerged hurt on Friday. Superintendent Querubin Manalang, public information officer of the Davao regional police, said the blast happened at the Rizal Special Education Center along Camus Street at about 4:45 p.m. Injured in the incident were 26-year-old Daniel Ligandang Banggaan, who was the security guard on duty; and Alfred Duria, 33, a deaf-mute and former student of the school. As of this posting, the victims are still being treated at a nearby hospital. Initial investigation revealed that two unidentified men on board a red XRM motorcycle hurled the grenade. Manalang said post blast investigation by members of the police's explosives and ordnance division is still on going. The Davao City blast happened several days after the deadly blasts and clash in Isabela City, Basilan. More than a dozen people, including three Marines, were killed in the series of attacks. Two blasts happened separately near a school and a cathedral, while authorities detonated a third explosive device that was recovered near the house of a local judge. In Maguindanao, another province in southern Philippines, a grenade also exploded during a meeting of local candidates and their supporters in Datu Odin Sinsuat town Wednesday night. A police official said the blast instantly killed a certain Haron Gulot and inflicted serious injuries to another identified as Mon Kaital, who eventually died while undergoing treatment at the Cotabato Regional Medical Center. - Mark D.
