Filipinos should dispose garbage properly, climate change official says

As nations all over the world celebrate International Earth Day, Climate Change Commission Vice Chairman Heherson T. Alvarez asked Filipinos to practice a simple “eco-act" daily by disposing their garbage properly. The simple act will help mitigate the threat of climate change and global warming, he said. “We are asking the developed countries for a deep and early cut of their carbon emissions, but here in the country, we cannot even dispose our garbage properly," Alvarez said. “Most Filipinos are not observing proper garbage disposal, recycling and segregation." Alvarez enjoined all local government units (LGUs) to strictly implement proper waste disposal while individuals can do their part by recycling and segregating their trash, and practicing water and energy conservation as well. He emphasized the urgency of garbage management, especially in Metro Manila which can now be considered the country’s “methane factory." “Garbage produces methane that is 21 percent more disastrous than carbon dioxide," he said. He also called for the further protection of the forest and watersheds by encouraging Filipinos to plant trees. “Unsustainable use of forests and watersheds also contribute to global warming because forests store a vast amount of carbon. When trees are cut down and forest was converted to another use, carbon is released back into the atmosphere that adds to global warming," Alvarez explained in a news release from the Office of Climate Change Commission. Experts as well as different sectors also joined the Commission on its mitigation and de-carbonization campaign as part of the Six Pillars of the National Framework Strategy and Program against Climate Change. - Cherry Sun, GMANews.TV
