Warriors survive National cagers; Eagles soar


University of the East survived a spirited challenge by the Philippine U-18 team before pulling off a 72-66 victory in the 2010 Filoil Flying V Tanduay First Five Preseason Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan. Paul Lee, Raffy Reyes, Garrick Ayala and rookie Lord Casajeros conspired down the stretch to provide the Warriors a big lift and endure the Nationals' bid of completing yet another upset win in the tournament.

UE bounced back from a disappointing 85-73 loss to Adamson last Friday. Lee finished with 19 points while Reyes added 12. Casajeros, who had just five points, helped extend UE's lead to 68-64 on a three-pointer with 1:51 remaining before Ayala made it 70-64 with a basket. The Recto-based cagers were actually trailing 57-56 with 7:30 left on Kiefer Ravena's lay up, but held sway at crunch time to repulse the RP cagers, who slipped to an even 2-2 record. Ravena finished with 18 points while Jeron Teng and Von Pessumal added 13 and 12 points, respectively. In other results, Jose Rizal University spoiled the debut of National University, coming away with a convincing 74-56 win. Joe Etame, the 6-foot-7 Cameroonian import, finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, including three straight on one play, to power the Heavy Bombers to their third win in four games.

Raycon Kabigting led the Vergel Meneses-coached team with 14. Nigerian Emmanuel Mbe and Kokoy Hermosisima scored 15 and 11 points, respectively for the Bulldogs, who came from a fruitful training camp in the United States. Ateneo smothered Letran, 114-90, in the nightcap. Eric Salamat and Nico Salva combined for 40 points as the Eagles notched their fifth win in six outings. The Eagles will try to wrap up their elimination round campaign with a win against Emilio Aguinaldo College on Saturday before proceeding for a three-week training in the United States. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
