US Embassy to nationals: Keep low profile amid 'sporadic' poll violence

Citing the danger of "sporadic violence," the United States Embassy in Manila has reminded its nationals in the Philippines to keep a low profile during the election period. The US Embassy, in a warden message, said such sporadic violence may occur throughout the Philippines "before, during and after" the May 10 polls. "US citizens living and working in the Philippines are urged to assess their personal security, to remain aware of their surroundings, to keep a low profile, and to avoid public gathering places, including high-profile events, in connection with the May 10 elections," it said in its May 6 warden message posted on its website Saturday. It said US citizens should pay attention to media for Philippine government announcements regarding areas likely to experience poll-related violence. The Embassy also warned a political or other demonstration can materialize on fairly short notice. US citizens who learn of a demonstration were advised to plan their travel accordingly. This includes avoiding crowds and exercising caution when traveling in the vicinity of a demonstration, it said. "As a reminder, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence," it said. It urged US citizens to monitor the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs or call 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the US or Canada, or toll line 1-202-501-4444. Those numbers are available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, except in US federal holidays. US citizens with concerns or questions may call the Embassy at 632-3012000, or go to the Embassy at 1201 Roxas Boulevard. — LBG, GMANews.TV
