Predawn explosion jolts Zamboanga City

A predawn explosion jolted residents in Zamboanga City Saturday, causing minor damage to a department store near the city hall. Radio dzXL said no one was initially reported hurt in the incident, which occurred at about 5:30 a.m. close to the Veteran’s Shrine near the Zamboanga City hall. The report said the explosion also caused minor damage to nearby establishments, including the Meteor Garden Department Store. Police are not discounting the possibility the incident was politically motivated, as it occurred two days before the country’s first automated elections. Investigators are also considering a “terrorist" angle in the explosion, the report added. The incident occurred while the Philippine National Police is on full alert status, which has been going on since May 5. — LBG, GMANews.TV
