On Election Day, PNP reiterates loyalty pledge to Constitution

Moments before 50 million Filipinos were to troop to polling centers to cast their votes, the Philippine National Police reiterated its loyalty to the 1987 Constitution and the people. PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa reiterated the PNP's vow to keep the country's first automated elections orderly. "We remain your servants and protectors, loyal only to our Constitution and with the best interests of the people foremost in our hearts and minds," he said in a statement posted at 6:09 a.m. on the PNP website. He added Monday is a crucial day for Filipinos as they exercise their right and sacred duty to elect the next leaders of the nation. Verzosa said the PNP, which went on full alert last week, is doing its best to ensure that the electoral exercises will be peaceful and orderly. But he also called for vigilance to make sure the elections are credible. "Let us be vigilant but patient and allow these processes to take a credible course towards reflecting the true will of the people," he said. Verzosa also urged Filipinos to respect and support who gets the mandate of the people. "Let US then respect and support whoever gets the mandate of the people, FOR THERE IS NO AUTHORITY EXCEPT THAT WHICH GOD HAS ESTABLISHED ... And together as a nation, let us move on towards a better and brighter future," he said. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
