Marine, election inspector hurt in Basilan ambush — Report

A member of the Philippine Marines and a member of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) were injured in an ambush in Basilan Monday morning. Radio dzXL reported the BEI members and military escorts were delivering election paraphernalia from Manggal town to Sumisip town when they were ambushed. Initial investigation showed that while the BEIs crossed Kamuir village at about 8 a.m., armed men opened fire on them. Police suspect the assailants may be members of a local politician's private army. Meanwhile, the report said BEIs in upper at lower Mahayahay in Maluso town in Basilan are afraid due to recent massacres in the area. — LBG, GMANews.TV
