Roxas throws sharp barbs at Binay, questions his loyalty

TARLAC CITY, Tarlac — Senator and Liberal Party vice presidential bet Manuel Roxas II lashed out Friday against Makati City mayor Jejomar Binay, his main rival for the post, by questioning the mayor's sense of loyalty. At a press conference here, Roxas contested claims by the camp of Binay that President-apparent Senator Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III may be better off with Binay than with him. “Ito lang ang masasabi ko. E kung sa ka-tandem niya di siya nagging totoo, ano pa kaya, paano siya magiging totoo sa ka-tandem ko (This much I will say. If he cannot be true to his running mate, how can he be true to my running mate)?" he said. Roxas, who issued such unusually sharp statement for the first time during the election period, was referring to claims that Binay did not vote for former President Joseph Estrada. Binay had denied the allegations. Binay and Estrada of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino had run against Aquino and Roxas’ Liberal Party. However, some sectors including Sen. Francis Escudero had promoted a “Noy-Bi" (“Noynoy-Binay") cross-party tandem with Aquino for president and Binay for vice-president. Roxas also maintained he will eventually win the vice-presidential race, as the votes from his political bailiwicks in the Visayas have yet to come in. He cited reports reaching him that he led Binay by 750,000 votes in Negros Occidental, 500,000 in Iloilo, and some 180,000 votes in Tarlac. “It’s not over until it’s over," he said of the vice-presidential race, despite Binay’s continuing to lead by over 800,000 votes nationwide.—JV, GMANews.TV
