After 'vote me' come 'thank you' streamers

Barely had cleanup teams started ridding streets and neighborhoods of posters, streamers and other campaign litter after the May 10 elections, a new wave of streamers started to emerge. Many of these materials were from local candidates who had been proclaimed winners in the country's first nationwide automated polls. In Manila, streamers from reelected mayor Alfredo Lim "thanking" Manila residents for their "continued trust" were seen in several areas in the city.

As of Saturday morning the streamers were seen near the Manila City Hall, along Roxas Boulevard, in the Quiapo area, and even in Chinatown district. Only last Wednesday, Lim led campaign litter cleanup operations in parts of the city. On the other hand, campaign litter remained in many parts of Metro Manila nearly a week after the May 10 elections.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), claiming it is on schedule in its cleanup operations, plans to shift its efforts to clearing secondary roads. "By (this coming) week, we will be moving to the secondary and tertiary roads and hopefully the local government units concerned will cooperate with us," MMDA Chairman Oscar Inocentes said. — LBG, GMANews.TV
