Orcullo enters semis of World Pool Masters

Dennis Orcullo remained on track of winning his first World Pool Masters crown after scoring an 8-3 win over Canada’s John Morra in their quarterfinal match Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Orcullo’s win gave him the first semifinals berth in the Party Poker.net-sponsored event being held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. The 2009 Predator International 10-Ball champion dominated Morra in the entire match and didn’t gave his opponent the chance to recover to complete the win in their quarterfinal encounter. Orcullo will either face compatriot Roberto Gomez or German Ralf Souquet in the Final 4. Gomez, the other Filipino bet remaining in the tournament, will try to arrange an all-Pinoy semis contest when he battles Souquet in their quarterfinal match on Sunday. "I played really well and I did everything. I won the first four games and I felt comfortable every time as I always had a shot. I had a lot of chances to clinch the game so I did," said Orcullo after beating Morra. Orcullo, who continues to brandish the same performance that propelled him in the semis, is hoping that momentum continues to be at his side. "I was always thinking positively and try to keep my focus."

"The competition is really great and the World Pool Masters is a wonderful event with so many top players so it's been very hard to go into the semi-finals," he added. Gomez scored an 8-3 win over Scotland’s Jayson Shaw to earn the right of a semis encounter with Souquet, who is an 8-6 victor against Indonesia’s Ricky Yang in the quarterfinals. "I played good – maybe I would give myself seven or eight out of 10," said Gomez, who’s behind the back shot – just when the shot clock warning bell was ringing – nearly cost him the game. "I just forget about everything I had done wrong as it would destroy your game if you are thinking about your mistakes," Gomez added as he looks forward to facing Souquet, whom he defeated in a tournament in Taiwan. "But everyone is confident of winning this tournament and everyone here is a master." The other quarterfinals matches will have American Charlie Williams facing Toru Kuribayashi of Japan while Thomas Engert battles Oliver Ortman in an all-German face-off. Williams defeated Naoyuki Oi of Japan, 8-5, while Kuribayashi stunned England’s Darryl Peach, 8-0, to earn spots in the Last 8. Engert downed Rodney Morris of the USA, 8-5, while Ortmann tripped compatriot Thorsten Hohman, 8-6, in the other Round of 16 matches. – GMANews.TV
